Joint Statement - Town & Yacht Club

Published: Monday, 04 May 2020 13:41

To the residents of the Town of Shelburne and Municipality of Shelburne; Some of you may have noticed there is early sailboat traffic in the harbour.

This is to let you know that SHYC board and management, representing the Shelburne Harbour Marina Association, are working closely with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to manage these arrivals in the midst of the Covid-19 situation.

In the case of the boats that have arrived and more which are expected, these are all Canadians returning from overseas per the federal government’s directive and came to the first available port of entry – Shelburne. They are not tourists. CBSA has been made aware of them prior to arrival and they are being directed, per CBSA, under the requirements of the provincial state of emergency.

One boat belongs to a family who own a house in Shelburne. That family has been cleared by CBSA to go directly to their home and self-isolate per provincial guidelines. Another boat is bound for Quebec. After making repairs and provisioning, they've been cleared by CBSA to proceed directly there. They have not stepped foot off their boat and have complied “to the letter” with the directives provided by Canada Border Services inspectors. In the above cases, as with any additional boats that arrive, provisioning is being arranged by SHYC Marina Association volunteers following all social distancing and other protocols.

Please be advised, under no circumstances are crews permitted to leave their boats.

Those boats who must quarantine here will do so on moorings with periodic provisioning arranged by our volunteers, as noted above.

On behalf of the club and the town, we want to thank the Shelburne Harbour Marina Association volunteers for their work in making this happen and keeping everyone safe.

 For SHYC, Rob StorkCommodore

For Town of Shelburne, Karen Mattattall Mayor

Easing of Restrictions Covid-19

Published: Monday, 04 May 2020 12:43

The Nova Scotia Government lifted the following restrictions, providing physical distancing rules of keeping two metres apart and not gathering in groups of five remain.

✅ Provincial and municipal parks and trails in the province are allowed to re-open, although playground equipment will continue to be off limits.

✅ Sportfishing will be allowed from shore or boat, but fishing derbies are not allowed.

✅ People can attend boating, yacht or sailing clubs for the purpose of preparing boats for use.

✅ Nova Scotians will be allowed to use and visit community gardens, and garden centres, nurseries and similar businesses can re-open.

✅ Golf driving ranges may open, including those at golf clubs, but courses must remain closed. Golf clubs are allowed to perform necessary maintenance and preparations for opening.

✅ People can use their cottages. This is restricted to one household unit at a time, and travel must be directly to the cottage and back. The province says travelling back and forth from cottages to primary residence is discouraged.

✅ Provincial and private campgrounds remain closed but can perform necessary maintenance and prepare for opening. An exception is recreational vehicles parked year-round at private campgrounds, which can be used following the same rules as cottages.

✅ Drive-in religious services are allowed, as long as people stay in their cars, parked two metres apart, and there are no interactions between people in cars and others.

🚫 Please note that, at this time, beaches will remain closed.

The province is developing a phased plan to further lift public health restrictions, and the timing of each phase will be determined by the result of the easing of restrictions.

Shelburne County Municipal Offices Remain Closed Until May 19, 2020

Shelburne County, NS, - All five municipal units have made the decision to further extend their municipal office closure to at least until May 19, 2020 due to COVID-19. Although the offices remain closed all municipal units are working to continue to provide those services it can during COVID-19.

Residents are encouraged to call their municipal office if you have any questions or visit the municipal website and social media for current updates.

The following remain in place as we continue to work under a Provincial State of Emergency:

 - All non-essential services, such as by-law enforcement, is reduced, in favor of more critical municipal services.

- All recreation related activities are suspended until further notice.

- All municipal related travel is suspended until further notice.

The municipal units will continue to operate and provide the essential services to its residents. We urge residents to check with their local unit to understand which services will continue and in which manner they will be served. We want to remind our residents that this is a time in which we need to come together and think about each other. Helping our neighbors and those most vulnerable, along with our personal safety is necessary. There is no doubt that these challenging times can cause anxiety and stress but there is no need to panic.

The residents of Shelburne County are resilient, considerate and supportive which will all help make the best of this situation. Please stay home when you can, wash your hands often and practice physical distancing of 2 metres or 6 feet. Stay Safe! Finally, being prepared and staying informed is vital.
