Karen Harris Mattatall, Mayor of the Town of Shelburne

Karen is a long time resident of the Town of Shelburne.  She has been a business owner/operator in our Town for over thirty (30) years and is the current owner of the Men’s Place Barber Shop and Co-owner of Waypoint Stop & Go Neighbourhood Store on Water Street. 

Our Mayor is the proud mother of three adult children including two daughters and a son; she is the grandmother of two beautiful grandchildren.  Her daughters live in Ottawa and Alberta respectively with the oldest working as a Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Ottawa and the younger as a Manager of Corporate Projects for Noralta Lodge Ltd.  Her son is a carpenter who is now living in Sable River.

Karen has been an active volunteer contributing numerous hours, in a variety of roles, for the following organizations:

• Past Chair of Little People’s Place
• Past Chair of Shelburne Elementary Home and School
• Past Chair of Shelburne Regional High School Advisory Committee
• Past Vice Chair of Crime Stoppers
• Past Chair of Community Health Board
• Member of the Southwest District Health Authority
• Coordinator of Shelburne Regional High School Replacement Committee
• Past Treasurer of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #63
• Past Member of the Tri-County District School Board
• Past President of Nova Scotia Barbers’ Association


In addition to the time spent on these boards, Karen has been actively organizing events and fundraisers in the community including Community Christmas Giving Tree, Shelburne Street Dance, Support our Troops Red Rally, Support our Troops Ball Tournament, Tsumani in Indonesia Fundraiser, Haiti Earthquake Fundraiser, The Bill Cox Roast and a volunteer bartender at the Osprey Arts Centre to name a few.
